English: Handley-Page airplane "Atlantic" in flight during attempted non-stop trip from New York to Chicago; 14-16 November 1919; {04.400/32}.
[dead link]The Handley Page V/1500 Atlantic was entered in the non-stop Transatlantic competition in 1919. It suffered from mechanical delays and was not ready before Alcock and Brown won the race in June 1919. Having flown from Newfoundland to New York, an attempt was made to fly non-stop to Chicago on 14 November 1919. Piloted by two Britons, Admiral Mark Kerr and Herbert G. Brackley, it suffered from overheating engines and landed near Mount Jewett, Pennsylvania. It took off the next day after repairs. Intending to refuel in Cleveland, Ohio, it landed at a racecourse near North Randall, Ohio on 16 November and both wingtips were damaged. It was dismantled and did not fly again. (Source: C.
