Encyclopaedia Britannica; Or A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and ..., Volume 10: “Party per Pale indented, Or and Gules;” borne by the right honourable Thomas Bermingham, baron of Athenry, in the kingdom of Ireland. Of this ancient and noble family, which are of English extraction, and took their name from the town of Bermingham in the county of Warwick, was William de Bermingham, who was possessed of the town of that name in the reign of Henry II. which continued in that family till the reign of Henry VIII.[1] As seen sculpted on the tunic of the effigy of Sir John de Bermingham (d.circa 1400) in St Martin's Church, Birmingham. Also forms the field of the arms of the modern See of Birmingham |
