The background gives an idea of the topography of the region inhabited by the Red Karens - a jumble of steep hills with narrow valleys between. The paths are almost impassable for beasts of burden. The photograph is from approximately 1905.Deutsch: Loilong-Karen-Frauen mit sonderbarem Beinschmuck,
bestehend aus Messing-ringen, die an einem Rotangbande unterhalb des Knies hängen. Diese Ringe hindern die Bewegung erheblich. Keine Frau geht ohne Not und wenige kommen Zeit ihres Lebens weiter als eine Stunde von ihrem Dorfe. Die Arme sind von einer engen Messinghülfe bis zu den Ellbogen bedeckt. Dansk: Loilong-Karen-kvinder med underlige smykker, messingringe samlet med plantefibre under knæet.
