"Que tengan por sus Armas conocidas un escudo, y un Castillo en medio, y tres Puentes de Piedra de canteria, y en que van a dar en el dicho castillo, las dos, sin Ilegar a él, en cada una de las dichas dos Puentes, que han de estar a los la-dos, un León Rampante, que hazga con la uñas en dicho castillo, de manera, que tengan los pies, en la puente, y los brazos en el castillo, y por la Orla, Diez hojas de Tuna, con sus abrojos, que nacen, en la dicha Provincia; en un Escudo a tal como éste, las cuales Armas y Divisa, damos a la dicha Ciudad, por sus Armas conocidas, por las que podáis traer, poner, e trayais, é pongais, en los Pendones, y Sellos, y Escudos, y Banderas, de ella, y en otras partes, donde quisiederes, y fueren menester." El escudo es azur -color de agua- en señal de la Gran Laguna donde se edificó la Ciudad de México. Al centro se distingue un castillo dorado y tres puentes de cantera a que van a dar al castillo, dos de ellos sin llegar a él. Sobre éstos dos, reposan sendos leones rampantes que flanquean al castillo. Las uñas de los brazos de cada león arañan el castillo y los pies reposan en cada puente. Los leones representan a los cristianos quienes victoriosos, conquistaron la antigua ciudad Tenochtitlan. En campo dorado está la orla del escudo -el borde exterior- y tiene diez hojas de tuna verdes con sus abrojos -con espinas-, que representan los señoríos de los nobles nativos y el paisaje donde se halla la ciudad.
