Summary
DescriptionBerkeley (of Stoke Gifford, Gloucestershire) arms.svg | Coat of arms of Berkeley of Stoke Gifford, Gloucestershire: Gules, a chevron ermine between ten crosses pattée argent. These arms may be seen in The Gaunts Chapel, Bristol. Blazon quoted in: Barker, W.R. St Mark's or The Mayor's Chapel, Bristol, Formerly called the Church of the Gaunts. Bristol, 1892, p.148. These are the arms of the Barons Berkeley of Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, with the difference of a chevron ermine in place of a chevron argent. Also arms of their descendants Berkeley of Bruton Abbey, Somerset, and Berkeley of Pylle, Somerset (descended from Berkeley of Bruton). The Berkeley family of Stoke Gifford was descended from Maurice de Berkeley (d.1347), killed at the Siege of Calais, who had acquired the manor of Stoke Gifford in 1337, the second son of w:Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley (1271–1326) of w:Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. |
