La palabra Azcapotzalco se deriva del (los vocablos) náhuatl: Azcatl que significa Hormiga, Potzoa o Potzalli que significa montículo, y Co que significa: “hormiguero”, por eso el significado de Azcapotzalco es "En el Hormiguero".
El nombre está ligado a una leyenda referente a Quetzalcóatl, deidad máxima de los toltecas. ". . . Después de formarse el Quinto Sol, Quetzalcóalt fue el encargado de volver a crear al hombre, y por ello tuvo que introducirse en el Mictlan o inframundo, donde la muerte guarda los restos fósiles de la humanidad pasada.
Las hormigas le indicaron a Quetzalcóatl el lugar donde se encontraban los restos humanos, y él mismo tuvo que convertirse en hormiga para robárselos y sacarlos; pero al huir a toda prisa, tropezó y cayó; los esqueletos quedaron desarmados y los huesos se revolvieron. Cuando los juntó y los volvió a armar, no coincidían, por ello algunos hombres son más pequeños que otros.
Más tarde las hormigas también penetraron en el inframundo para sacar granos de maíz que habían Quedado olvidados y eran necesarios para mantener a la nueva humanidad."
