Notes | Wearing the dragon-robes of a Chinese official and with a sextant and celestial globe at his side, Chitasei Goyo (C: Wu Yong, the 'Wise Star') is one of the bandit heroes of the popular Chinese novel 'Tales of the Water Margin' (C: Shuihu zhuan, J: Suikoden). He was exceptionally wise and was entrusted with the military strategy of the gang. However, it may also double as a portrait of the Jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest, who taught Western mathematics and astronomy in China in the 1660s. (Label copy, TTC 2000) | |||||||||||||||||||||||
