2024 disease outbreak in Devon, England / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In May 2024, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, a parasitic waterborne illness, started in Brixham in south Devon, England. As of 27 May 2024[update], the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported 100 cases of the illness, with many more reporting symptoms.[1] Following South West Water's (SWW) distribution of boil water notices to 17,000 properties in Torbay on 15 May,[2][3] all affected customers were automatically paid £215 in compensation, costing Pennon, the owners of SWW, £3.5 million.[4] This boil water notice was lifted for 85% of properties (14,500 properties, covering 32,000 residents) which recieve their water from the Alston reservoir after tests for cryptosporidium came back negative[5] on 18 May, however 2,500 properties which recieve their water from the Hillhead reservoir remained under the notice.[6]
