A nurse by education, Cekic was first elected to the central committee of the Socialist People's Party in 2004. In the 2007 elections, she became a member of the Danish parliament. She was her party's spokesperson for health related issues.[2][3] She left the party in 2016 due to disagreements regarding refugee policies and is not a member of any party today.
In 2018 she was the second Dane ever to be invited to give a TED talk in New York on her invention - Dialogue Coffee - a new way of meeting and communicating among people, including those who might disagree.
