Η Αυλίδα ήταν αρχαία Βοιωτική πόλη γνωστή από τον Τρωικό πόλεμο ως το λιμάνι από το οποίο αναχώρησε ο στόλος των Αχαιών. Σύμφωνα με τον μύθο κατά την παραμονή των Αχαιών στην Αυλίδα, ο Αγαμέμνονας έλαβε χρησμό πως έπρεπε να θυσιάσει την κόρη του Ιφιγένεια στον ναό της Αυλίδιας Άρτεμης για να φυσήξει ευνοϊκός άνεμος και να μπορέσει να αναχωρήσει ο στόλος. Από τις αρχαίες περιγραφές φαίνεται πως η πόλη βρισκόταν κοντά στις ακτές του Ευβοϊκού κόλπου ανάμεσα στους όρμους μεγάλο και μικρό Βαθύ, πολύ κοντά στην Χαλκίδα. Ήταν χτισμένη σε βραχώδη λόφο, κάτι που φαίνεται και από τον χαρακτηρισμό της από τον Όμηρο ως Πετρόεσσας[1] αλλά και από τον Στράβωνα ως «πετρῶδες χωρίον»[2]. Η πόλη τα επόμενα χρόνια αποτελούσε επίνειο της Τανάγρας. Το όνομά της σύμφωνα με την μυθολογία οφειλόταν στην Αυλίδα, κόρη του μυθικού βασιλιά της Θήβας Ωγύγου[3]
