Die Sophienkathedrale (russisch Софийский собор) ist eine Kirche und russisch-orthodoxer Bischofssitz des Erzbistums Nowgorod im Nowgoroder Kreml. Sie wurde in den Jahren 1045–1050 erbaut und ist damit das zweitälteste erhaltene Kirchengebäude der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche. Als Teil der Altstadt von Weliki Nowgorod ist sie außerdem seit 1992 UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe. Im Westportal der Kathedrale befindet sich die Bronzetür aus Płock.
Die 38 Meter hohe, fünfkuppelige Steinkathedrale wurde zwischen 1045 und 1050 von Wladimir von Nowgorod und Bischof Luka Schidjata erbaut und ersetzte eine Kathedrale aus Eichenholz, die von Bischof Joachim von Korsun im späten zehnten Jahrhundert errichtet worden war.[1] Bei dem Bau sind mindestens 10 Tausend Kubikmeter Steine und Ziegel verbraucht worden. Sie wurde von Bischof Luka Schidjata am 14. September 1050 oder 1052, dem Fest der Kreuzerhöhung, geweiht.[2] Obwohl die Kathedrale allgemein als Sophienkirche bekannt ist, ist sie nicht nach einer der weiblichen Heiligen dieses Namens benannt (z. B. Sophia von Rom); der Name stammt vielmehr vom griechischen Wort für Weisheit (σοφία, von dem sich Wörter wie philosophia oder Philosophie – „die Liebe zur Weisheit“ – ableiten), und so ist die Nowgoroder Kathedrale in Anlehnung an die Hagia Sophia in Istanbul der Heiligen Weisheit Gottes geweiht. Die Heilige Weisheit ist ein Hinweis auf Christus.
Die große, goldene Kuppel wurde 1408 von Erzbischof Johann II. vergoldet. Die sechste und größte Kuppel krönt einen Turm, der zu den oberen Galerien führt. Im Mittelalter soll dort die novgorodianische Schatzkammer untergebracht gewesen sein, und es gab dort eine Bibliothek, die angeblich von Jaroslaw der Weise gegründet worden war. Als die Bibliothek 1859 in die Geistliche Akademie Sankt Petersburg verlegt wurde, umfasste sie mehr als 1.500 Bände, von denen einige aus dem 13. Jahrhundert stammen. Der Erzbischof Leo Tserpitsky hat die Bibliothek in Anlehnung an die alte Tradition wieder ins Leben gerufen. Im Jahr 2004 beherbergte sie etwa 5.000 Bände.[3]
Es wird vermutet, dass die Kuppeln ihre heutige helmartige Form in den 1150er Jahren erhielten, als die Kathedrale nach einem Brand restauriert wurde. Der Innenraum wurde 1108 im Auftrag von Bischof Niketas ausgemalt, obwohl das Projekt erst kurz nach seinem Tod realisiert wurde. Erzbischof Niphont ließ irgendwann während seiner Amtszeit das Äußere weiß tünchen und die Vorhallen Martirievskii und Pretechenskaia ausmalen, aber diese Fresken sind heute wegen der häufigen Brände kaum noch sichtbar. In den 1860er Jahren mussten Teile des Innenraums neu ausgemalt werden, und die meisten der heutigen Fresken stammen aus den 1890er Jahren.[5] Erzbischof Euthymius II., der größte Bauherr, der jemals das Amt des Erzbischofs bekleidete, ließ einen Glockenturm aus weißem Stein mit fünf Erkern errichten. Er war es auch, der 1433 den Facettenpalast nordwestlich der Kathedrale errichten ließ. Unter seiner Schirmherrschaft wurde auch der nahe gelegene Uhrturm fertiggestellt, der jedoch im 17. Jahrhundert einstürzte und 1673 restauriert wurde.
Vom 12. bis zum 15. Jahrhundert war die Kathedrale ein zeremonielles und spirituelles Zentrum der Republik Nowgorod und wurde zum Symbol für die Stadt selbst. In der Chronik wird erwähnt, dass die Nowgoroder bereit waren, „ihr Haupt für die Heilige Weisheit hinzugeben“ oder „für die Heilige Weisheit ehrenvoll zu sterben“.[4] „Als ein Fürst sie verärgerte, sagten sie ihm: „Wir haben keinen Fürsten, sondern nur Gott, die Wahrheit und die Heilige Weisheit.“[5] Bei einer anderen Gelegenheit machten sie die Kathedrale zum Symbol der Stadt selbst und sagten: „Wo die Heilige Weisheit ist, da ist Nowgorod.“[6]
Die Sophienkathedrale war einer der größten Grundbesitzer im Nowgoroder Land. Seine Besitztümer waren in allen Teilen des Nowgoroder Landes und darüber hinaus verteilt. Jahrhundert besaß das Haus einen eigenen Hof in Moskau, und in der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts gehörten ihm auch 41 Klöster mit ihren Ländereien und Bauern. An der Spitze der Sophienkathedrale stand der Bischof (später Erzbischof). Ihm zur Seite standen der Leiter der Kanzlei (d'yak) und der Schatzmeister sowie etwa 100 weitere Mitarbeiter, darunter Schreiber, Buchbinder, Ikonenmaler und Goldschmiede.[7]
Die Kathedrale war lange Zeit die große Nekropole der Stadt, in der 47 bedeutende Persönlichkeiten der Stadtgeschichte begraben sind, darunter mehrere Fürsten und Posadniks sowie 32 Bischöfe, Erzbischöfe und Metropoliten von Nowgorod. Die erste Bestattung in der Kathedrale war die des Fürsten Wladimir selbst im Jahre 1052, der erste Bischof war Luka Schidjata im Jahre 1060. Die letzte Bestattung in der Kathedrale war die des Metropoliten Gurii im Jahre 1912. Die meisten Gräber befinden sich unter dem Boden in der Martirievskaia Porch an der Südseite der Kathedrale, die nach Bischof Martirii benannt ist. Spätere Bestattungen fanden unterirdisch in der Pretechenskaia Porta' an der Nordseite der Kathedrale statt. Heute befinden sich mehrere Gräber im Hauptteil der Kirche. Die Sarkophage von Fürst Wladimir und Fürstin Anna befinden sich über der Martirievskaia Porch, Erzbischof Johann II. ist in der nordwestlichen Ecke des Hauptteils der Kirche neben der Pretechenskaia Porch begraben. Bischof Nikita ruht in einem glasüberdachten Sarkophag zwischen den Kapellen der Geburt der Jungfrau Maria und der Heiligen Ioakim und Anna. Der Sarkophag wird an seinen Festtagen (30. Januar, dem Tag seines Todes, und 30. April/13. Mai, dem Tag der „Enthüllung seiner Reliquien“, d. h. der Öffnung seines Grabes im Jahre 1558) geöffnet, damit die Gläubigen seine Reliquien verehren können. Zwei weitere Fürsten befinden sich ebenfalls im Hauptteil der Kathedrale und in der Geburtskapelle der Jungfrau Maria.[8]
Die Kathedrale wurde in den 1570er Jahren von Iwan dem Schrecklichen geplündert, aber von Erzbischof Leonid (1572–1575) restauriert. Er ließ die Zarentafel errichten, die sich direkt am Südeingang des Hauptteils der Kathedrale in der Nähe der Martirievskii Porch befindet. Leonid ließ auch mehrere große Kronleuchter in der Kathedrale aufhängen, von denen jedoch nur noch einer erhalten ist.[9]
Im 18. Jahrhundert residierten die Erzbischöfe bzw. Metropoliten von Nowgorod in St. Petersburg, wobei sie auch als Erzbischöfe bzw. Metropoliten von Nowgorod und St. Petersburg bezeichnet wurden. Obschon Nowgorod somit technisch betrachtet weiterhin einen Prälaten aufwies, war dieser nur selten vor Ort präsent, sodass die Leitung der örtlichen Kirche zumeist durch einen Bischofsvikar erfolgte. Die Grabstätten von zwölf Metropoliten von Nowgorod und St. Petersburg (oder Leningrad) befinden sich nicht in der Sophienkathedrale, sondern in der Alexander-Newski-Kloster in St. Petersburg.
Während der Besetzung Nowgorods durch die Nationalsozialisten wurde der Kreml durch die Kämpfe sowie den Missbrauch durch die Nationalsozialisten schwer beschädigt. Die Kathedrale selbst blieb jedoch erhalten. Das große Kreuz auf der Hauptkuppel, welches mit einem Metallvogel versehen ist, der möglicherweise den Heiligen Geist in Form einer Taube symbolisiert, wurde von der spanischen Infanterie entfernt. Über einen Zeitraum von mehr als sechs Jahrzehnten befand es sich im Museum der Akademie für Militärtechnik in Madrid, bis es schließlich am 16. November 2004 von den spanischen Brüdern Miguel Ángel und Fernando Garrido Polonio, welche das Kreuz in einem Madrider Militärlager entdeckt hatten, an die russisch-orthodoxe Kirche zurückgegeben wurde. Die Kuppeln erlitten im Krieg schwerwiegende Beschädigungen, in deren Folge der große Christus Pantokrator in der Kuppel zerstört wurde. In der Überlieferung findet sich die Erzählung, dass die Maler ihn mit einer geballten Faust darstellten. Der Erzbischof instruierte sie, Christus mit einer geöffneten Handfläche darzustellen. Als sie am darauffolgenden Morgen zurückkehrten, befand sich die Hand jedoch wieder in einer geballten Position. Als sie am nächsten Morgen zurückkehrten, hatte sich die Hand wiederum in einer geballten Form manifestiert. Nach wiederholten Bemühungen soll eine Stimme aus der Kuppel dem Erzbischof mitgeteilt haben, dass er das Bild in Ruhe lassen solle, da das Schicksal von Nowgorod weiterhin in der Hand Christi liege, solange dessen Handfläche geschlossen bleibe.[9][10]
Während der Sowjetzeit war die Kathedrale ein Museum. Die Kathedrale wurde 1991 an die russisch-orthodoxe Kirche zurückgegeben. Eine Inschrift an der Nordwand des Westeingangs zeugt von der Wiedereinweihung durch Bischof Lev und Patriarch Alexius II.

Die Sophienkathedrale ist ein fünfschiffiger Kathedrale mit drei Apsiden und zehn Säulen. An drei Seiten, mit Ausnahme der östlichen, schließen sich zweistöckige Galerien an, die eine beachtliche Breite aufweisen. In der südlichen Galerie, welche sich südlich des Eingangs befindet, ist ein Treppenturm situiert. Die Säulen der Kathedrale sind kreuzförmig gestaltet und weisen flache Vorsprünge an allen Innen- und Außenwänden auf. Die Chöre weisen eine signifikante Fläche auf und nehmen den westlichen Teil des Mittelschiffs, zwei Teile der Mittelschiffe sowie die gesamten Seitenschiffe ein. Die Chöre im Mittelschiff und im Querschiff öffnen sich durch Doppelbögen, welche auf Zwischenpfeilern ruhen (rund im Mittelschiff und facettiert im Querschiff), in den Unterkuppelraum. Die Zwischenpfeiler des zweiten Ranges weisen einen quadratischen Querschnitt auf, während die Pfeiler, welche die Gewölbe über dem südwestlichen und nordwestlichen Teil des Chors tragen, facettiert sind. Alle Gewölbe, auf denen die Chöre ruhen, sind zylindrisch und mit ihren Achsen entlang der Nord-Süd-Linie gedreht. In der ersten Emporenreihe, die sich im mittleren Bereich der West- und Südfassade befindet, waren die Öffnungen offen, während sie in den übrigen Bereichen sowie im gesamten Umfang der zweiten Emporenreihe geschlossen sind. Der Zugang zum Chor erfolgt über den südwestlichen Teil der Kathedrale, wobei zunächst der Treppenturm passiert wird, bevor die westliche Galerie des zweiten Ranges erreicht wird. Von dort aus gelangt man schließlich ins Innere des Tempels. Die Steintreppe windet sich mehrmals um eine runde Säule, die in der Mitte steht. Die Stufen der Treppe sind breit und zwischen ihnen befinden sich häufig Podeste. Nach dem Durchgang zum Chor führt die Treppe weiter bis zur Spitze des Turms, von wo aus ein Ausgang zum Dach der Kathedrale möglich ist.
Die östlichen Bereiche der ersten Reihe von Galerien werden von Kapellen eingenommen, die durch große, unabhängige, halbrunde Apsiden gekennzeichnet sind. Die Seitenkapelle in der südlichen Galerie ist der Geburt der Jungfrau Maria gewidmet, in der nördlichen Galerie der Apostel Johannes. Die westlichen Wände dieser Seitenkapellen weichen von der allgemeinen Gliederung der Tempelsäulen ab, indem sie nach Westen verschoben sind. Dies ist auch bei den Wänden über ihnen in der zweiten Ebene der Fall, sodass an den östlichen Enden der Galerien geschlossene Räume entstehen. Geschlossene Räume werden zudem durch die winkelförmige südwestliche Teilung der Galerien in beiden Rängen gebildet. Des Weiteren ist die westliche Abtrennung der nördlichen Empore im ersten Rang als Seitenkapelle zu nennen, welche der Enthauptung Johannes des Täufers gewidmet ist. Diese ist durch eine sehr flache bogenförmige Apsis gekennzeichnet, welche sich westlich des Eingangsbereichs befindet. Der mittlere Teil der südlichen Galerie wird als „Märtyrer-Vorhalle“ bezeichnet, der westliche Teil als „Korsunskaja-Vorhalle“. Im östlichen Bereich des südlichen Kirchenschiffs befindet sich die von Joachim und Anna errichtete Seitenkapelle.
Der zentrale Bereich der Kathedrale ist mit kreuzförmigen, zylindrischen Gewölben bedeckt. Über der Vierung erheben sich fünf Kapellen, deren Anordnung eine diagonale Gliederung aufweist. Des Weiteren ist ein weiteres Kapitel zu vermerken, welches den Turm krönt. Die äußersten nördlichen und südlichen Seitenschiffe sowie das westliche Querschiff sind abwechselnd mit zylindrischen Gewölben und Gewölben mit dreieckigem Querschnitt bedeckt. Dabei sind die zylindrischen Gewölbe in den nördlichen und südlichen Seitenschiffen mit ihren Achsen in Nord-Süd-Richtung gedreht, während dies im westlichen Querschiff lediglich für das äußerste südliche Gewölbe zutrifft, welches entlang der Linie B-3 verläuft. Der erste Rang der Galerien (mit Ausnahme der nördlichen) ist mit zylindrischen Gewölben bedeckt, welche auf Arkbutanen ruhen. In der zweiten Etage der südlichen Galerie sind die Gewölbe halbzylindrisch, in der westlichen Galerie zylindrisch ausgeführt.
Das Dach der Kathedrale weist ein zweistufiges Gewölbedach auf. Einige Gewölbe sind rund, beispielsweise das sogenannte Zakomare, andere wiederum giebelig. Auf dem vergoldeten Kreuz der zentralen vergoldeten Kuppel befindet sich eine Taube.
Die an den Fassaden der Kathedrale vorhandenen dekorativen Elemente sind von zurückhaltender Gestaltung. Die genannten Elemente beschränken sich auf einen zinnenbewehrten Gürtel an den Archivolten der Zakomare sowie Abschnitte mit dekorativem Mauerwerk. Sämtliche Trommeln der Kapitel werden durch einen mit gestreiften Zinnen verzierten Gürtel abgeschlossen, wobei ein horizontales Gesims fehlt. Die zentrale Apsis ist mit dünnen Halbsäulen verziert, welche nicht bis zum Boden reichen. Die Umrahmung der Eingänge zur Sophienkathedrale sowie die Verzierung der großen Fenster über den Eingängen mit Plattenbändern stellen späte Ergänzungen dar, die in das 16. und 17. Jahrhundert datiert werden können.
Der ursprüngliche Fußboden wies eine Differenz von rund 130 cm zur heutigen Höhe auf. Zudem waren die Eingänge nicht mit großflächigen Fenstern versehen und die übrigen Fenster wiesen eine geringere Breite auf. Bis zum Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts war der Einbau hoher Ikonostasen nicht üblich. Der Chor hatte die Funktion der Beobachtung des Hauptaltars inne. Von diesem Standort aus war eine Beobachtung des Gottesdienstes ohne Schwierigkeiten möglich.
Der Innenraum der Kathedrale präsentiert sich aufgrund der massiven Säulen sowie der schmalen Säulengewölbe in einer beengten Wirkung, die nicht im Einklang mit der strengen Schlichtheit der äußeren Formen des Gebäudes steht. Es zeigt sich, dass sowohl im Inneren als auch im Äußeren keinerlei Elemente vorhanden sind, die nicht durch konstruktive Notwendigkeiten gerechtfertigt wären. Das einzige dekorative Element in der gesamten Innenarchitektur stellen die durchbrochenen Platten der Säulen dar, welche im Abstand von drei Reihen aufgestellt sind. Die Bögen des Chors, die von unten leicht erscheinen, dienen nicht der Zierde, sondern tragen das Gewicht der Gewölbe des ersten Stocks.
Die Dimensionen des Hauptvolumens der Kathedrale, exklusive Emporen, lassen sich wie folgt zusammenfassen: Die Länge beträgt 27 m, die Breite 24,8 m. Zusammen mit den Emporen ergeben sich eine Länge von 34,5 m und eine Breite von 39,3 m bei einem Azimut von 120 Grad. Die Seitenlänge des Unterkuppelvierecks variiert zwischen 6,19 und 6,28 Metern. Die Dicke der Wände der Kathedrale beträgt 1,2 Meter. Die Höhe von der Ebene des alten Fußbodens bis zur Taube auf dem Kreuz des mittleren Kapitels beträgt 38 Meter. Die Wände der Kathedrale wurden in Steinbauweise errichtet. Als Baumaterialien finden Kalkstein sowie Kopfsteinpflaster Verwendung. An einigen Stellen findet sich eine Gürtelverlegung, welche aus mehreren Reihen von Ziegeln in einer Technik mit einer versteckten Reihe besteht. Die Sophienkathedrale wurde aus Wolchow-Kalkstein errichtet, der sich durch bläuliche, gräuliche, grünliche, gelbliche und bräunliche Farbtöne auszeichnet. Die Verbindung der Steine erfolgt mittels Kalkmörtel, dem eine Beimischung von Zement beigemengt ist. Eine Bearbeitung der Steine erfolgte lediglich im Bereich der Unterfütterung der Seiten, welche zur Oberfläche der Wände zeigen. Die Unterfütterung war erforderlich, um die Lotlinie der Mauern zu bewahren. Die unterschiedliche Färbung des Steins hat die Forscher zu der Hypothese veranlasst, dass die ursprüngliche Sophia von außen nicht mit Zementmörtel bedeckt war und die Steine in ihrer reichen Farbpalette nackt blieben. Die Verwendung von Kalk- und Feldsteinen, zwischen denen ein glatter Zement von rosabrauner Farbe aufgetragen wurde, verlieh den Wänden der Kathedrale, die sich durch ihre schlichte und künstlerisch lakonische Gesamtform auszeichnet, eine außergewöhnliche malerische Sättigung.
Die schimmernde, transparente Färbung der Steine, die in verschiedenen Größen, darunter auch walnussgroße Exemplare, vorkommen, wird von einer abgeschrägten Fugenschicht umgeben. Diese Färbung erweckt den Eindruck von Edelsteinen, die in einen Rahmen aus nicht weniger farbenfrohem Fugenmaterial eingefasst sind. Diesbezüglich sei jedoch angemerkt, dass lediglich in Bezug auf die geradlinigen Wände eine Aussage getroffen werden kann.
In den Bögen und Gewölben erfolgte eine weitere Verlegung von Ziegeln in der zuvor beschriebenen verdeckten Reihentechnik. In sämtlichen Bögen und Bogenstürzen, welche Fenster- und Türöffnungen flankieren, sowie in den Gewölben wurde Backstein verwendet. Die Kuppelgewölbe wurden aus einem einzigen Ziegelstein gefertigt. Für die Konstruktion der inneren Gewölbe wurde Stein verwendet.
Die innere Oberfläche des Mauerwerks ist mit kleineren Steinen und Ziegeln sowie einer beträchtlichen Menge an Mörtel gespickt. In Bezug auf den Charakter des Mauerwerks ist festzustellen, dass dieser in den verschiedenen Teilen des Gebäudes keine einheitliche Ausprägung aufweist. Des Weiteren sind Bereiche mit dekorativem Formsteinmauerwerk auszumachen. Das Grundformat der Ziegel beträgt 3,7–4,5 × 24–26 × 38–40 cm, wobei auch andere Größen zu verzeichnen sind, darunter 4 × 18 × 21, 4 × 24 × 31, 4 × 31 × 40 sowie 4 × 26 × 43 cm. Des Weiteren sind Formziegel, darunter trapezförmige und halbkreisförmige, zu finden. Des Weiteren sind in den Wänden mehrere Reihen von Eichenholzschwellen zu verorten. In einigen Bereichen des Mauerwerks findet sich eine signifikante Verwendung lokaler Töpfe. Die Fundamente der Kathedrale wurden als Streifenfundamente aus Steinblöcken auf Mörtel errichtet. Die Tiefe der Fundamente variiert zwischen 1,6 und 2,5 Metern, wobei im westlichen Teil des Gebäudes eine geringere Tiefe von 1,6 bis 1,8 Metern und im östlichen Teil eine größere Tiefe beobachtet wird. Unter den Fundamenten wurden hölzerne Unterkonstruktionen festgestellt. Der ursprüngliche Zementboden der Kathedrale lag mehr als zwei Meter tiefer als der heutige. Des Weiteren wurden die Überreste von zwei weiteren Stockwerken aus Steinplatten freigelegt, welche in die Zeit des 11. und 12. Jahrhunderts datiert werden können. In der zentralen Apsis wurden die Überreste eines Mosaikfußbodens entdeckt, der offenbar im 12. Jahrhundert verlegt wurde. Im zentralen Bereich der Apsis wurden zudem kleine Fragmente eines in den Zementboden eingelassenen Mosaiks sowie Fragmente von grauen Kalksteinplatten mit Mosaiken entdeckt. Im unteren Bereich der Apsiswände rund um den Altarraum sind mehrere Steinplatten mit Mosaikeinlagen in der Verkleidung erhalten geblieben. In der zentralen Apsis wurden die Überreste des Throns, der Säulen des hölzernen Kivoriums sowie des Sockels des Altarkreuzes entdeckt. Der ursprüngliche Hochaltar wies eine zweistufige Struktur sowie eine Bemalung mit Fresken auf. Im späteren Verlauf wurde er zu einem dreistufigen Altar mit einer Verkleidung aus Mosaik umgestaltet. Des Weiteren lassen sich Spuren einer aus Holz gefertigten Altarschranke nachweisen. In der Geburtskapelle wies der erste Fußboden eine Ausführung in bewässerten Fliesen auf, während der spätere Fußboden eine Mosaikgestaltung aufwies. In der Kathedrale sind vergleichsweise wenige antike Fresken erhalten geblieben. Die Fresken spiegeln verschiedene Stadien der Ausschmückung des Gebäudes wider, wobei die Datierung auf die Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts, 1108, 1144 und 1195–1196 erfolgt. Ein strukturelles Merkmal der Sophienkathedrale, das in anderen russischen Bauwerken des 11. Jahrhunderts nicht zu finden ist, ist das Vorhandensein von Viertelkreisbögen (arkbutans) in der südlichen Märtyrervorhalle. Sie befanden sich zudem im nördlichen Narthex, verschwanden jedoch mit dem Wiederaufbau der nördlichen Mauer im letzten Viertel des 13. Jahrhunderts. Die als „Arkbutanen“ bezeichneten Bauteile, welche Teil der äußeren Galerie in Sofia waren, sind in der romanischen Architektur von beachtlicher Bekanntheit.
Die älteste Ikone in der Kathedrale ist vermutlich die Ikone der Gottesmutter des Zeichens (Богоматерь Знамение), welche gemäß einer Legende im Jahr 1169 auf wundersame Weise Novgorod rettete, als die Susdal die Stadt angriffen. Die Ikone wurde aus der Verklärungskirche in der Iljinstraße geholt und von Erzbischof Johann II. in der Kathedrale sowie an den Mauern der Stadt aufgestellt. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde neben der Verklärungskirche die Znamensky Kathedrale errichtet, um die Ikone aufzubewahren. Während der Sowjetzeit wurde sie im nahe gelegenen Nowgoroder Museum aufbewahrt (ebenso wie die Gebeine von Bischof Nikita, die angeblich in einer Papiertüte aufbewahrt wurden, bis sie 1957 in die Kirche des Apostels Philippus und des Wundertäters Nikolaus überführt wurden). Die Rückführung der Ikone in die Kathedrale erfolgte Anfang der 1990er Jahre, wo sie sich gegenwärtig rechts neben den Goldenen Türen der Ikonostase befindet. Die Ikone der Sophia, der Heiligen Weisheit Gottes, ist ebenfalls von beachtlichem Alter und befindet sich ebenfalls auf der Ikonostase rechts neben den Goldenen Türen, wo üblicherweise die Ikone des Heiligen angebracht ist, dem die Kirche geweiht ist. Mehrere Ikonen sollen von Erzbischof Vasilii Kalika und Erzbischof Iona (1458–1470) gemalt oder in Auftrag gegeben worden sein, und Erzbischof Makarii (1526–1542) soll die Ikonen in der kleinen Ikonostase in der Geburtskapelle der Mutter Gottes gemalt haben.[9]
Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurden drei Pforten in die Kathedrale integriert, die unter den Bezeichnungen Korsun-, Vasili- und Sigtuna- (oder Płock- oder Magdeburger) Pforte bekannt sind. Die Korsun-Tore befinden sich am westlichen Zugang zur Geburtskapelle der Mutter Gottes an der Südostecke des Doms. Sie sollen von Bischof Ioakim Korsunianin, dessen Name auf eine Verbindung zu Korsun auf der Krim hinweist, nach Nowgorod gebracht worden sein. Die Vasilii-Tore wurden der Kathedrale im Jahre 1335 durch Erzbischof Vasilii Kalika gestiftet und nach der Plünderung der Kathedrale im Jahre 1570 durch Zar Iwan IV. in dessen Residenz in Alexandrow bei Moskau verbracht, wo sie sich bis heute befinden. Des Weiteren übten sie einen Einfluss auf Kunstwerke aus, die unter Iwan dem Schrecklichen im Moskauer Kreml ausgeführt wurden. Die Türen am Westeingang, welcher als Haupteingang der Kathedrale gedacht war, obgleich der Haupteingang heute der Nordeingang, der auch als Bronzetür aus Płock oder Sigtuna-, Magdeburg-Tor bezeichnet wird, soll im Jahr 1187 von Truppen aus Nowgorod aus der schwedischen Stadt Sigtuna geplündert. Es lässt sich mit hinreichender Sicherheit annehmen, dass sie in den Jahren 1152–1154 von Magdeburger Meistern für den Erzbischof von Płock in Polen angefertigt und geschnitzt wurden, wo sie rund 250 Jahre lang einen der Eingänge zur Kathedrale von Płock schmückten.[11] Es lässt sich mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit annehmen, dass die Tore von den Nowgorodern Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts erworben wurden. Als möglicher Erwerber kommt Erzbischof Evfimii II. in Betracht. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass der Erzbischof die westliche Kunst liebte, was sich am gotischen Stil im Palast der Facetten manifestiert. Eine alternative Theorie besagt, dass dies in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts geschah.[12] Die Umstände, unter denen die Nowgoroder in den Besitz der Płock-Tore gelangten, sind nicht genau bekannt. Es besteht jedoch die hohe Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sie entweder ein Geschenk der Erzbischöfe von Płock oder der Herzöge von Masowien für den Bruder des polnisch-litauischen Königs Władysław II. Jagiełło, den litauischen Herzog Lengvenis Algirdaitis, oder für Erzbischof Evfimii II. waren.[13][14][9][15] Eine alternative Hypothese besagt, dass die Tore im 13. Jahrhundert von heidnischen Litauern aus der Kathedrale in Płock entwendet und später auf irgendeine Weise nach Nowgorod verbracht wurden. Die erste Theorie gilt als die wahrscheinlichste. Die Magdeburger oder Płock-Pforte (manchmal auch fälschlicherweise als Sigtuna-Pforte bezeichnet) wird lediglich zweimal pro Jahr zu besonderen Anlässen geöffnet. Einige Berichte legen jedoch nahe, dass sie auch bei der Leitung der Göttlichen Liturgie durch den Erzbischof geöffnet wird. Seit 1982 werden in der Kathedrale von Płock Kopien der Pforten präsentiert, welche ein Geschenk aus Nowgorod darstellen.
Die Taubenfigur, ein Symbol des Heiligen Geistes, krönt das Kreuz auf der Hauptkuppel der Kathedrale. In einer lokalen Legende wird berichtet, dass eine lebende Taube, die auf der Kuppel saß, beim Anblick des Massakers von Nowgorod vor Schreck erstarrt sei. Im 18. Jahrhundert befand sich in der Schatzkammer der Kathedrale eine vergoldete silberne Taube. Sowohl die Kuppel als auch die Figur wurden während der Besetzung Nowgorods durch die Nationalsozialisten zerstört und nach dem Krieg wieder aufgebaut. Die Originalfigur wurde im Jahr 2005 von ehemaligen Angehörigen der Blauen Division, die in Nowgorod gekämpft hatten, nach Nowgorod zurückgebracht.[16]
