Das Amt Werther war bis 1972 ein Amt im Kreis Halle (Westf.) in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland mit Sitz in Werther (Westf.).

Die Vogtei Werther, bestehend aus den Kirchspielen Werther und Dornberg, wurde ab Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts vom Vogt in Schildesche mitverwaltet.
In der napoleonischen Zeit wurde 1807 aus der Vogtei Werther der Kanton Werther im Distrikt Bielefeld des Königreichs Westphalen.[1] 1811 wurde der nordwestliche Teil des Kantons Werther, im Wesentlichen das Gebiet des Kirchspiels Werther, von Frankreich annektiert. In diesem Gebiet wurde gemäß der üblichen französischen Verwaltungsstruktur die Mairie (Bürgermeisterei) Werther eingerichtet.[2]
Nach der Niederlage Napoleons fiel das gesamte Ravensberger Land an Preußen zurück und wurde Teil des Regierungsbezirks Minden der 1815 gegründeten Provinz Westfalen. Bei der Einteilung der Provinz in Kreise im Jahre 1816 wurde die Bürgermeisterei Werther dem Kreis Halle (Westfalen) zugeordnet.[3]
Mit der Einführung der Westfälischen Landgemeindeordnung wurde schließlich aus der Bürgermeisterei Werther zum 25. September 1843 das Amt Werther gebildet, zu dem die Stadt Werther sowie die Gemeinden Häger, Isingdorf, Rotenhagen, Rotingdorf, Schröttinghausen und Theenhausen gehörten.[4]
Ämter waren die unterste Verwaltungsinstanz und wurden zunächst von durch die Regierung ernannten Amtmännern, später von Amtsbürgermeistern geführt. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hießen die Leiter der Ämter Amtsdirektoren. Durch das Bielefeld-Gesetz wurde das Amt Werther zum 1. Januar 1973 aufgelöst und die Gemeinden bis auf den größten Teil von Schröttinghausen, der nach Bielefeld eingegliedert wurde, zur Stadt Werther (Westf.) zusammengeschlossen.[5]
