Teulu o hydrocarbonau yw alcanau. Maent yn cynnwys yr elfennau carbon a hydrogen wedi'u cysylltu â bondiau sengl. Methan (CH4), ethan (C2H6), propan (C3H8) a bwtan (C4H10) yw aelodau cyntaf y gyfres. Mae gan alcanau fformiwla cemegol cyffredinol o'r ffurf CnH2n + 2 ble mae n yn dynodi y nifer o atomau carbon - e.e. os yw n yn 2, bydd C2H2x2 + 2 = C2H6.
