Prif ystyr y gair serch yw "teimlad o hoffter neu diriondeb tuag at berson neu beth". Nid yw 'serch' mor ddwfn â 'cariad'. Er enghraifft ni fyddid byth yn cyfeirio at 'serch Duw'; bob amser 'cariad Duw'. Mae rhywun 'mewn cariad', byth 'mewn serch'.
