Původně trhová osada s hradem poprvé zmiňována k roku 993 („Navsty super Albiam“, tedy „na Ústí nad Labem“).[1] Z doby po povýšení na královské město (kolem roku 1260) dosvědčena česká podoba Úsť (k roku 1262 zapisována jako Vzt).[1] Z tohoto období je zaznamenána i německá podoba Usk (náhrada českého -ť v německé -k je doložena i u německé podoby Sezimova Ústí)[1], z níž se přes pozdější Ausk postupně vyvinulo Aussig.[1] Základem českého názvu je staročeské ústie, které vychází z praslovanského *ustьje, „ústí“ (vtok do řeky).[1] Neshodný přívlastek (nad Labem) k odlišení od stejnojmenných lokalit připojován od 14. století.[1] Německá podoba však je bez přívlastku.[1]
