La Football Association of Wales és l'òrgan encarregat d'organitzar el torneig, el qual s'ha disputat, amb excepció dels períodes de les dues Guerres mundials, cada any des del 1877-78. Als inicis del futbol al país, aquest es disputava principalment al nord del país, ja que al sud l'esport més practicat era el rugbi. La FAW fou fundada a Ruabon, a prop de Wrexham el 1876, i Wrexham fou la seu de la FAW fins al 1986. No fou fins al 1912 que un club del sud, Cardiff City, guanyà la copa per primer cop.

Fins al 1995, els clubs gal·lesos que disputaven competicions angleses i els clubs anglesos propers a la frontera podien disputar la copa. Des del 1996, només els clubs que disputen les competicions de la FAW hi poden prendre part. D'aquesta forma queden exclosos de la competició els 6 principals clubs del país, com són: Cardiff City FC, Swansea City AFC, Wrexham AFC (el darrer d'aquests que guanyà el torneig el 1995), Newport County, Merthyr Tydfil i Colwyn Bay.

El darrer club anglès que guanyà la competició fou el Hereford United el 1990.
