Замак узнік хутчэй за ўсё ў канцы XIII стагоддзя як памежная вартаўнічая крэпасць на гандлёвым шляху ў Польшчу. Па некаторых крыніцах яго пабудаваў у 1280 годзе польскі князь Баляслаў, зяць Белы IV. Упершыню ж замак згадваецца ў 1311 годзе. У 1412—1772 гадах замак быў нароўні з іншымі спішскімі гарадамі аддадзены Польшчы ў якасці закладу за каралеўскі доўг, дэ-юрэ застаючыся венгерскім, дэ-факта польскім. У 1553 годзе замак быў пашкоджаны вялікім пажарам, у 1555 годзе пачаў перабудоўвацца. У XVII стагоддзі замак быў пашыраны і зноў перабудаваны. У наш час замак рэстаўруецца. У замку знаходзіцца Любаўнянскі Музей.
