يشير مصطلح الخيانة الجنسية (في العامية، تعرف باسم الخداع أو الزنا أو وجود علاقة غرامية) في الغالب إلى نقض أي عهد متوقع سواء كان جنسيًا أو عاطفيًا صراحةً أو ضمنًا في أي علاقة حميمة.
قد تكون الخيانة الزوجية عن طريق علاقة حميمة جسدية و/أو علاقة حميمة عاطفية. يُقال إن تأثير الخيانة الزوجية لا يرتبط فقط بممارسة الجنس بعيدًا عن العلاقة، ولكن أيضًا يصل للثقة والخداع والكذب والغدر.[1]
عادة ما تسمى الخيانة الجنسية لأحد الزوجين بالخيانة الزوجية أو الزناأوعلاقة.
يختلف السبب المكون للخيانة بين الثقافات وداخلها ويعتمد على نوع العلاقة الموجودة بين الأفراد. حتى في العلاقة المفتوحة، قد تنشأ الخيانة إذا قام أحد الزوجين بفعل أشياء غير متعارف عليها في حدود تلك العلاقة.
أما الخيانة العاطفية، فهي إعادة توجيه المشاعر بكاملها، مثل توجيه الحب أو الوقت أو الانتباه الذي تتحكم فيه العاطفة نحو شخص أو أشخاص خارج العلاقة.[2] قد يمتد مستوى المشاركة في العلاقة الحميمة من العلاقة الشخصية إلى العلاقات العاطفية عبر الإنترنت. تعد الخيانة العاطفية أكثر تأثيرًا عند مقارنتها بالعلاقة الجسدية، إن لم يكن تأثيرها أكثر من ذلك وما يترتب عليه من أذى وألم ومعاناة. تشمل معظم أنواع الخيانة الزوجية كلاً من الخيانة الجسدية والعاطفية.[3]
