إن الطفرة النقطية (I93M) في موروثة ترميز هذا البروتين مسؤولة عن مرض باركنسون في إحدى حالات كنرد (kindred).
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، اكتشف أن تعدد الأشكال (S18Y) في هذا الجين يرتبط بانخفاض خطر الإصابة بمرض باركنسون.
يرتبط هذا الجين أيضًا بـ مرض آلزهايمر, وهو لازم لـ التشابك العصبي ووظيفة الاستعراف.[2]
إن إنزيم UCH-L1 في الإنسان وبروتين UCHL3 الذي يرتبط به ارتباطًا وثيقًا يتميز بهيكل قدة من أكثر الهياكل تعقيدًا والتي اكتشفت حتى الآن لأحد البروتينات، حيث يوجد خمس نقاط تقاطع عقدة. ويتوقع أن هيكل العقدة قد يزيد مقاومة البروتين للانحلال في البروتوزوم.[3][4]
لقد وجد أن إنزيم هيدرولاز يوبكتين الكربوكسي الطرفي (Ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1) يتأثر بموروث COP9 constitutive photomorphogenic homolog subunit 5.[5]
