Sydney is in 1904 geïnkorporeer en op 1 Augustus 1995 ontbind nadat dit by die streeksmunisipaliteit ingesluit is. Sydney is die grootste stedelike sentrum van die Kaap-Breton-eiland met 'n bevolking van 33 012 (2006). Dit vorm saam met Sydney Mines, North Sydney, New Waterford en Glace Bay die Industriële Kaap-Breton-streek (Industrial Cape Breton).
