'n Anti-inflammatoriese middel is 'n geneesmiddel, 'n chemiese stof, vir die behandeling van pyn. Anti-inflammatoriese middels maak sowat die helfte van pynstillers uit, wat die pyneffek verlig deur die vermindering van inflammasie in teenstelling met opiate en opioïede, wat direk op die sentrale senuweestelsel inwerk.
Nie-steroïed anti-inflammatoriese middels (NSAIMs) verlig pyn deur die inhibering van die siklo-oksigenase (COX)-ensiem. Die COX-ensiem is behulpsaam met die vorming van prostaglandiene, die oorsaak van inflammasie. In sy geheel, verhoed die NSAIMs dat prostaglandiene ooit gesintetiseer word, dit lei tot die vermindering of uitskakeling van pyn.
Algemene voorbeelde van NSAIMs is: aspirien, diklofenak, ibuprofeen, en naprokseen. Die nuwer spesifieke COX-inhibeerders word nie saam met die tradisionele NSAIMs geklassifiseer nie, selfs al het hulle vermoedelik dieselfde werkingswyse.
Aan die ander kant is daar pynstillers wat algemeen geassosieer word met anti-inflammatoriese middels, maar wat geen anti-inflammatoriese effekte het nie. 'n Voorbeeld hiervan is parasetamol, wat in die VSA asetaminofen genoem word en onder die handelsnaam "Tylenol" verkoop word. In teenstelling met NSAIMs, wat pyn en inflammasie verminder deur die inhibering van COX-ensieme, het parasetamol reeds in 2006 getoon dat dit die heropname van endokannabinoïdien stuit, wat slegs pyn verminder, en verduidelik waarom dit 'n minimale effek op inflammasie het.
