Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova or Kosovë, Serbian: Косово, Kosovo) is a territory in southeastern Europe. After international negotiations failed to reach a consensus on an acceptable constitutional status, Kosovo's provisional government unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on xx February 2008. The independent Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovës, Serbian: Република Косово, Republika Kosovo) has since been recognized by xx other states. The Serbian government regards the territory as an integral part of Serbia, the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbian: Аутономна покрајина Косово и Метохија, Autonomna pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija, also Космет, Kosmet; Albanian: Krahina Autonome e Kosovës dhe Metohisë). This is also the position of the remainder of the international community.

In addition to its frontier with the remainder of the Serbian state, Kosovo borders Montenegro, Albania, and the Republic of Macedonia. It has a population of just over two million people, predominantly ethnic Albanians, with smaller populations of Serbs, Turks, Bosniaks, Romani people, and other ethnic groups. Priština is the capital and largest city.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999 placed Kosovo under the authority of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), with security provided by the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR). Although the Resolution legally affirmed Serbia's sovereignty over Kosovo, in practice Serbian governance in the province has been virtually non-existent since then. UNMIK's role in Kosovo is in the process of being supplanted by EULEX, a European Union body.
