Between 1948 and 1964, the TBC housed a homonymous theater company, which was created to provide a space for amateur theater in the city of São Paulo. After the company's activities ceased, the venue offered theatrical performances until 2008, when it closed permanently. Among the artists who have performed at the theater are Cacilda Becker, Paulo Autran, Cleyde Yáconis and Fernanda Montenegro.[1][2]
It was declared a landmark in 1982 by the Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage (Portuguese: Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico, Arqueológico, Artístico e Turístico - Condephaat) and in 1991 by the Municipal Council for the Preservation of the Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the City of São Paulo (Conselho Municipal de Preservação do Patrimônio Histórico, Cultural e Ambiental da Cidade de São Paulo - Conpresp). In 2018, it was acquired by the Social Service of Commerce (Serviço Social do Comércio - SESC) to serve as a unit for the organization.[3][4][5]
