Georgievski founded the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization - Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) and was the first party president from 1990 to 2004. However, following accusations of being pro-Bulgarian, he broke off with the party he founded and established the VMRO-NP, and later acquired Bulgarian citizenship.
