There 197 countries today. But some regions fight for independence, a reason that this number could change. If I counted some territories it might go up to kinda 215.
Moving on, there are some countries that where fresh from its independence. Example is South Sudan, an African country, became independent in July 9, 2011. In the first years 90's there were 15 countries that became independent due to the breaking of the Soviet Union,
first is Lithuania, in 1990, then in 1991 goes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
