NOT the Christianity article
Welcome
This is my sandbox for editing the Christianity Page for the purposes of streamlining it. Discussion and colaboration is desired.
Issues addressed so far:
- Transfering extra Protestant and Catholic sections into subsets of the section on Scripture interpretation. (A careful reading of them reveals that they are essentially descriptive of scripture interpretation, and this move simplifies the too complicated structure of the article)
- Integrating 'History and origins' and 'Christian divisions' into one section on history, since you cannot discuss divisions outside of their historical placement, since there was needless duplication of material, and the sections themselves weren't terribly helpful.
- Editing the Persecution section into something more history centered (since it is in a section on history originally), breaking it apart into more useful chunks.
Christianity (Hebrew: נצרות) is a monotheistic[1] religion centered on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as depicted in the New Testament.[2] Christianity teaches that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament, and that the New Testament records the Gospel that was revealed by Jesus.
Christianity began as a sect within Judaism,[3] and includes the Hebrew Bible (known to Christians as the Old Testament) as well as the New Testament as its canonical scriptures.[4] Like Judaism and Islam, Christianity is classified as an Abrahamic religion (see also, Judeo-Christian).[5][6]
The name "Christian" (Greek [Χριστιανός] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) Strong's G5546), meaning "belonging to Christ" or "partisan of Christ",[7] was first applied to the disciples in Antioch, as recorded in Acts 11:26.[8] The earliest recorded use of the term "Christianity" (Greek [Χριστιανισμός] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) is by Ignatius of Antioch.[9]
