Development of the GameCube began in around 1998. Nintendo partnered with several organisations, with ArtX, IBM and Matsushita (Panasonic), producing the graphics processing unit, central processing unit and game disc technology, respectively. The controller was a departure from the shape of the Nintendo 64 controller and more closely resembled the models of its competitors.
