Le musée du thé (Tea Museum) est un musée privé situé au coeur des plantations de la région de Munnar Il appartient à la société Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited (KDHP) qui a racheté, il y a quelques années, à Tata Tea Limited les plantations de cette région. Ce petit musée présente l'histoire du site avec des photographies anciennes et un film ainsi que des objets (machines à écrire, à calculer, dispositifs électriques...) utilisés par les premiers exploitants anglais qui sont à l'origine de la culture du thé au Kerala. Il montre également une chaine de traitement des feuilles de thé noir selon deux procédés : le procédé orthodoxe et le procédé CTC (Crush, Tear and Curl). Au cours de la visite, il est évoqué la manière de fabriquer le thé vert et le thé blanc. Une boutique permet d'acheter différentes sortes de thé. Dans les années 1930, s’inspirant des machines développées au siècle dernier pour le procédé Orthodoxe, Sir William McKercher pousse plus loin l’industrialisation de la transformation du thé en mettant au point le procédé CTC, de l’anglais crushing, tearing and curling (broyage, déchiquetage et roulage). Il s’agit de combiner plusieurs étapes de la transformation en 3 étapes simples durant lesquelles les feuilles de thé seront séchées, déchiquetées, oxydées et roulées. Cette technique permet d’augmenter considérablement le rendement de la production en accélérant le processus d’oxydation, en simplifiant le procédé, et en standardisant la qualité. selon camellia-sinensis.com/carnet/?p=1077 |
