Description |
English: Portret of Jacobus Hendricksz Zaffius, the Catholic archdeacon for the underground Catholics of Haarlem. An old man at the time the painting was made, he witnessed the siege of Haarlem and the subsequent loss of the central Haarlem Catholic St. Bavo Cathedral to the Protestants. Though still active for the Catholic underground church, he was tolerated and not harassed by the Haarlem council. He sponsored 5 rooms for the Frans Loenen Hofje in 1609, which was memorialized with a plaque that states "Quinque camera a praeposito Zaffio Fundate A.1609". ÆTATIS SVAE 77 ANo 1611

Notes | Long considered a Hals fragment "cut down" from a three-quarter-length portrait, examination concluded that it was never cut down, but was always this format. Because the engraving by Jan van de Velde in 1630 shows him seated at a table with a skull, PJJ van Thiel (1993) concluded this was a copy after a lost original, but Slive and Grimm have since claimed that this portrait is the original. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
